Award Winning Stylist Zerina Akers Talks New Showroom, June Ambrose, and Black Representation

Updated: Feb 14, 2023

I could have never anticipated that I would get the opportunity to meet Emmy award-winning celebrity stylist Zerina Akers Saturday night at Sergio Hudson's NYFW runway show located at Spring Studios.

Most notable for being Beyonce's personal stylist and her exceptional work as the costume designer of Queen B's musical film, "Black is King," Akers is undeniably a force in the industry and her talent for styling and bringing celebrities to life on the red carpet is evident by her impressive resume.

The 36 year old Maryland native and New York Based Stylist has been recognized for her noteworthy contributions in publications like Harpers Bazaar, Essence and Vogue magazine.

In addition to Bey, she has styled the lovable Yara Shahidi, rapper Megan thee Stallion and filmmaker Ava DuVernay, and despite reaching critical acclaim she was so humble and welcoming in person.

I definitely felt at home in her presence and she's definitely a girl's "GIRL!" At one moment, she even grabbed a piece of lint from my hair which reminded me that her attention to detail is what has set Akers apart from the rest.

Her "Black Owned Everything" e-commerce site highlights emerging black-owned businesses in the fashion, beauty and lifestyle industry. When I asked Akers what can we expect from her in 2023, she stated, " you can look out for my new wardrobe showroom where I am really pushing sustainable fashion and making it accessible," said Akers.

Check out the full interview and photos of Zerina and I below and leave a comment letting me know what you think!

Rashidah: What are you wearing today?

Zerina: I am wearing a Sergio Hudson stripe coat and just all black. I have on my sea-bag boots and my naked wardrobe cat suit,

Rashidah: So right now, they are saying in fashion that the men of fashion are ruling everything, but I beg to differ. You are the #1 stylist right now, creative director, you’ve studied costume design , you are an expert at what you do, talk to me about how that feels?

Zerina: It fills good, you know the best part about it is that I get to be representation for other young black girls. The same way I use to look up to women like June Ambrose.

Rashidah: Who has been your favorite muse thus far?

Zerina: Honestly it’s just been the young black girls coming up, rocking their sh*t.

Rashidah: Lastly, what can we expect to see from Zerina Akers in 2023?

Zerina: In 2023, you can look out for my new showroom , my new wardrobe showroom really pushing sustainable fashion and making it accessible.
