Janelle Monáe owns the red carpet in Vera Wang, Quinta Brunson in Robert Wun and Kerry Washington in

Updated: Jan 19, 2023

As if the Golden Globes wasn't enough to set the tone for 2023, the 28th Critics’ Choice Awards was everything we fathomed and so much more. The Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles was nothing short of the crème de la crème that film and television has to offer.

Singer and “Europhia” actress, Janelle Monáe served us sex appeal in an unconventional sheer halter Vera Wang gown that had risque cutouts below her midsection and a train that laid impeccably. While fan favorite Quinta Brunson embraced her hourglass figure in a sparkly body-con ensemble with ruffles by London designer, Robert Wun.

Brunson, 33, who is known for her most notable work as the Executive producer, writer and star of ABC’s “Abbott Elementary,” was nominated for six awards, the most for any TV series of the night. With her well deserved recognition and exposure, it’s been invigorating to see all of her exquisite looks that celebrity stylist Bryon Javar has come up with. Somehow he never ceases to miss his mark. Brunson wasn't the only star to represent and win big for “Abbott Elementary.”

Sheryl Lee Ralph won Best Supporting Actress for her role as Barbara Howard in “Abbott Elementary” and looked golden, both in the literal and figurative sense. Ralph illuminated on the red carpet in her gold custom off the shoulder Jovana Louis gown , with Vince Camuto platforms and Misho Designs jewelry.

In addition to Ralph’s luminous attire, “Scandal” actress Kerry Washington looked brilliant and spring forward in a strapless Giorgio Armani Privé dress embroidered with crystals. She paired her exceptional look with diamonds from Bulgari and Italian luxury heels by Santoni. I mean, what girl doesn’t love Bulgari?

Atlanta native and actress Danielle Deadwyler also wore Bulgari jewelry with a custom Louis Vuitton platinum sequin dress and Stuart Weitzman open toe heels. She definitely looked grand and wasn’t the only one to dazzle and showcase sequins on the red carpet.

Nominated Best Actress for “The Woman King,” Viola Davis also wore an espresso colored sequin gown by Valentino as she strided down the carpet with hubby Julius Tennon. The dress which had an attached cape made Viola look refined, elegant and glamorous. The silhouette of Viola’s gown also accentuated her body, like that of Angela Bassett’s Christian Siriano gown.

Angela Bassett, who won for Best Supporting Actress as Queen Ramonda for her role in “Black Panther: Wakanda forever,” shut it down last night. Bassett, who is the woman Benjamin Button of our time, wore a velvet black gown with dramatized r by Christian Siriano. Her gold Messika jewelry and Judith Leiber cheetah clutch made her look fierce and luxurious.

From luxe designers, and innovative styles to sheer fabrics, and daring cutouts, celebrities definitely took risks at this year's Critics’ Choice Awards. It’ll be interesting to see how stars show out and their fashion choices for the 65th Grammys on Feb 5th.
